Suggestions for organizing large media collections

One of the most common questions we get from customers is about the best way to organize their media collections.  Since this is a very personal decision, the dividers have been created to give users flexibility.  Most people choose to alphabetize their DVDs and their CDs with the DiscSox 24-Blank/Alphabetical Divider sets. Sizes vary depending on the DiscSox sleeve you’re using.  http://www.mmdesign.com/cd-dvd-accessories.htm

You can also organize by genre, grouping music categories such as Classical, Jazz, Pop/Rock, and movie categories such as Comedy, Drama, Documentary, and then affix the group names that you need onto blank dividers.  We offer 96 music or movie pre-printed labels, and these can be found at http://www.mmdesign.com/products/labels.htm#musiclabels.

Depending on how large your collection is, though, you might want to organize by genre and by alphabet.  For example, we ourselves have five different genres of music, and within each genre, we organize the discs by alphabet. You can alphabetize with either the DiscSox 5-Blank/Alphabetical Divider sets, which includes A-C, D-G, H-M, N-S, T-Z,

or with the DiscSox 24-Blank/Alphabetical Divider sets.  All DiscSox dividers can be turned upside down and used as BLANK dividers.

If you need more specialized label IDs, you can easily find Avery blank clear labels at the office supply store, and create your own with your home printer.

  1. I love my DVD Pro Sleeves and am even getting use to having the new “Poly” sleeves. I use the dividers but would love it if you came out with dividers that were the same ‘height’ as the sleeves and had a ‘tab’ on the side with the divider letter. My cabinet has shelves that are just a little more than the height of a DVD package. I use photo boxes to hold my DVD sleeves because of the depth of my cabinet. Having dividers with the tab on the side would fit better and make it easier to see. I’ve tried other side tab dividers but they articulate all the way from top to bottom, the bottom letters do not fit in my boxes.

  2. Hi Leanne,

Thank you for your post. Unfortunately we will not be able to manufacture dividers with tabs on the side because the volumes would be very low. Low volumes would make them VERY expensive.
However, you could take the HiDef Pro Dividers and use them sideways (see http://www.mmdesign.com/products/24divhdp.php). I am not sure about your box dimensions but you can always cut tabs into the HiDef Pro dividers (the material is easy to cut e.g. with a paper cutter) to make it work for you.
You can either use the printed or blank side and use self adhesive letters to make your own alphabetical dividers.
